Meeting of April 11, 2005 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church

Minutes

The Coalition has endorsed Helen Kotzky and Fred Moore for the school board election on May 17th, 2005.

Ted Holmes has sent out letters asking for contributions to the Coalition for this year’s school budget and school board campaigns.

John DeMarino has talked with Jerry Cicchelli about having people speak about the school budget at meetings of community organizations. Members of the school administration will speak at some organizations, beginning with a budget presentation to the Chamber of Commerce and Business Improvement District on Wednesday, 6 April at 8AM at Sterling Glen and to the InterAgency Council on 13 April at 9AM at the Middle School.

Don Scarl, Helen Kotzky, and John DeMarino have put together a PowerPoint presentation about the Glen Cove schools and John will arrange for dates for Don, John, Helen, and Fred Moore to give the presentation at organizations like the Senior Center, Sons of Italy, Polish National Home, and the AARP. They would also like to present this to the building PTA's and PTA Council,

Claudia Delgrosso is organizing a letter writing and phone campaign suggesting that Coalition members write their neighbors to encourage them to vote for the school budget and asking each member to call several neighbors the day before the election asking them to come vote with them.

Leslie Whitely has organized a meeting for Glen Cove real estate agents on Tuesday, 19 April at 9:30AM in the high school.

Leslie Whitely and Ronnie Lavine are arranging the annual Spring Brunch at which will take place at "The Coffee Shop and More" on Saturday morning, May 7th, the day before Mother’s Day. The cost will be $28.00.

We will encourage an invitation to community leaders to visit a school building.

We have taken half-page ads in the Record Pilot and the Gold Coast Gazette explaining what the Glen Cove schools have lost because of the budget vote last June.

After an extensive discussion of how best to get the school budget passed, Don Scarl asked that anyone with good ideas should e-mail them to him ASAP. We are putting together an advertisement with bullets emphasizing the most important facts and issues. How can we best convince people that our schools are our biggest community asset and that a 2nd failed budget would be devastating to the quality of education in Glen Cove? Please give us your input. Thank you.
